The Inside of Autism - Annual Membership

Training and Q&As with Kieran Rose for a whole year

Hi, I'm Kieran, creator of The Inside of Autism

Most Autism training is stereotypical, wrapped up in non-Autistic behavioural-based perspectives and incredibly deficit focused and ultimately useless. It doesn't have any meaning.

The Inside of Autism strips back those stereotypes, provides insight from multiple Autistic perspectives, is grounded in up-to-date research; and shifts from a centred non-Autistic viewpoint to an Autistic one.

Welcome to The Inside of Autism Membership!

2024 is the second year of The Inside of Autism Membership. In 2023 we welcomed over 200 founding members and created an amazing, safe, mixed community of Autistic and non-Autistic people, professionals and non-professionals.

My hope is that the community will keep growing and thriving as together we keep learning and reframing our understanding of the Autism narrative.

Reframe Your Understanding of The Autism Narrative

Membership gives you 12 months of access to all of the training and resources along with a place on 12 monthly Q&As with Kieran (which are recorded and added to the membership).

What People Think About The Inside of Autism (part 1)

These comments are all from students of The Inside of Autism and we're grateful for each and every one.

"As a volunteer with SENDIASS I would love all SENCos to complete this course."

"This was the most valuable, emotionally-enlightening course I have EVER participated in!"

"Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and lived experiences with us. I greatly appreciate it as it helps me to become a better human, mother, and therapist."

"I’m even more proudly autistic after attending the course."

"This course allowed my hunger to be awoken, to want to work with other like-minded professionals to look differently at health care, and encouraging me to want to improve my own specialist service for every individual who comes to use it, to make their experience better."

"The explanation around stigma, trauma, invalidation, masking and mental health was powerfully described and reinforced the need to address how we speak about, understand, support autistic children/young people as clinicians"

"It was just brilliant. You taught me so much about my son in an hour; more than anyone in 8 years has."

"I’m even more proudly autistic after attending the course."

"I felt respected and seen and proud of the life I was providing for my son within our neurodivergent family."

"My mind was truly blown by all the knowledge from Kieran and I don't believe that even years down the line, with my own research, would I ever have learnt so much."

"I just wanted to express my gratitude to the whole team for putting together such an instructive, comprehensive, and grounded overview of autism"

"And the additional resources! There is so much there for me to go away and 'monotrope' with. Thank you!"

"This training has created a profound shift in my understanding both personally and professionally. As a trauma-informed, neurotypical therapist who supports neurodivergent clients, I have and will continue to work hard to check my blind spots and learn to better fulfill my values of being anti-oppressive, strength-based and collaborative in my work. The blind spot I've had thanks to my previous learning rooted in deficit-focused Autism research (not done by Autistic researchers) was alarmingly big, but thankfully is shrinking thanks to this training and connections with Autistic voices I will continue to nurture. I am grateful and humbled by the work accomplished by the presenters and during this training. This is helping me be a better human, not just a therapist, so thank you."

"It's an amazing course with lots practical resources as well as being extremely validating, more than I could have imagined to be honest."

"The Inside of Autism taught me to open my mind, open my heart, listen to my senses, listen to other people's experiences (in whichever way they communicate them, not just to mouth words) with respect and validation in mind; it taught me to think critically and constructively; and it taught me to carefully select the experts by experience who have put oodles and more oodles of thought and effort into what they know and believe, who are the people I most want to be listening to, who have most skilfully and generously shared their wisdom and in so doing they have made this world a better and safer place for many people including me and my family - thank you. Thank you for making a lifelong positive difference to me and my family."

"This was the best training I have ever taken on autism and supporting autistic people -- and I've been to a lot in the last 6 years. Being accessible and affordable was a plus. Kieran hones in on the topics that really matter and that no other training is even mentioning - the problems with diagnostic criteria, monotropism, double empathy, burnout, masking. This course should be what is recommended to parents, teachers, and mental health professionals."

More detail about The Inside of Autism content:

Most Autism training is stereotyped, generic and behaviouralist; and fails to incorporate the insight and wealth of knowledge that exists within the worldwide Autistic community, which research is now only beginning to wake up to.

This course is designed not as Autism training, but as a challenging and stark reframing of your understanding of Autistic people, young and old, against the backdrop of a narrative that pathologises, dehumanises and stigmatises us.

If you are a Professional the course will challenge your confirmation bias and push you to removing your focus from 'autism', to refocus on Autistic *people* allowing you to reconceptualise the way you identify, work with and support Autistic people in an informed way, whether those are Autistic children or adults; and truly humanising Autistic people in the process.

If you are a parent or carer the course is designed to give you insight from the perspective of your loved-one, reframing your understanding of their behaviours and needs; and empowering you to listen to your gut and be able to advocate for them from a place of strength; enabling you to enable them to have autonomy and authenticity.

If you are Autistic the course is designed to validate your experience, help define and name those experiences in a shared and relatable way; and centre the voice of Autistic people as the centre of knowledge about autism.

Previous attendees include Autistic and non-Autistic people: Parents, Teachers and Teaching Assistants, Academics, Nurses, Doctors, clinical and research Psychologists, Psychiatrists, CAMHS and CYPS workers, MH professionals, SLTs, OTs, Local Authority workers and a whole lot more.

These were all people who recognised that the way they are working isn't working, who wanted to learn to do things differently, do better and are now doing better. Some of whom return a second or even third time because of the amount of learning that goes on and the sense of community that it encourages.

My sincere hope the annual membership continues to build a community where everyone is welcome and everyone learns together. This is Autistic people, Autistic professionals and non-Autistic professionals being in a space together where it is SAFE to challenge, question and learn together.

I am proud to have first created a space like this during the live rounds of training between 2020-22 and then during the first year of the Membership in 2023.

What People Think About The Inside of Autism (part 2)

We also take on constructive feedback and have improved and updated the training based on feedback from our students. So whilst all of the comments we've shared here are positive we also just wanted to let you know that we do listen to your comments!

"Seeing, hearing and being with other autistic adults is really nice and essential. Extra nice that they come from different countries."

"‘The Inside of Autism’ is trajectory changing for all who participate. This is a must for ALL educators, professionals and families seeking to be allies to the Autistic community. Please walk in the door with Kieran. You won’t regret it! It is the ONLY course I have taken twice, and I would do so again!!"

"I am a primary school trained teacher and I have just started teaching in a special class and this course has given me soooooo much more understanding and compassion for my students."

"This was a hugely inspiring, informative, eye-opening, challenging (rightly), and powerful training course. Thank you so much."

"Just to say a big thank you. The course has been amazing.

As a parent of an autistic son (and possibly daughter who has slipped under the radar so far), my introduction to the autistic world has been quite the journey!
As a student SLT, listening to what is primarily still deficit based autism teaching has been "interesting" (and I may have got myself into trouble a few times by challenging some things!!)

But this course has been the affirming, breath of fresh air I really needed. The delivery of the course is fabulous, and the organisation and communication is brilliant."

"There is a real sense of community and it is really humbling to see important names from the autism advocacy communities taking the course alongside newbies like me, and picking up on their ideas, links and side comments has brought me a lot of extra food for thought that I wasn't expecting.

What I like most is how Kieran gets you to the essential concepts the long way, by peeling away gradually all the layers of bias, misinformation and malpractice, until you are left with a sense of validation and agency. It is a bit of a journey, but one worth taking several times, and sharing with others."

"This course was truly phenomenal. I appreciate how much time and energy went into curating and delivering it, and I have learned so much more about autism and Autistic experiences having completed it. I also found the opportunity to ask questions invaluable. It really has completely changed my understanding of autism and will impact my work (and my personal relationships) for the rest of my life. Thank you!"

"I have found the course in extremely informative, eye opening and emotional at times. I originally signed up to gain knowledge to support my daughter but I have identified with many things discussed over the week. Having experienced anxiety, social anxiety and obbessional thinking since childhood. I have always felt I never quite fitted in in many environments. This has now prompted me to seek a ASD assessment through the support of my GP. Thankyou so much it is an amazing course with lots practical resources as well as being extremely validating, more than I could have imagined to be honest."

"This is a generous and heartfelt offering to the mental health training available for professionals. All practitioners should do this training as a foundation for best practice with autistic people and as an invitation to a much deeper level of understanding and advocacy."

"Affirming, Affirming, Affirming! I'm a recently self-identified autistic woman in my 50s, so it's taking a great deal of adjustment and energy working through internal changes. This course has helped me to feel a sense of belonging that I've always been searching for. Thank you, thank you, thank you!"

"This course is so comprehensive, informative and gets to the nitty gritty and sometimes uncomfortable stuff. This is social justice work that Kieran is doing.

I have recommended to so many colleagues and friends. It has been life changing."

"FUCKING BRILLIANT. I have already told probably hundreds of people on the Professional FB pages I belong to about you and this, and I already signed up to request info on how to become an affiliate. I am DOWN FOR THIS FIGHT!"

"This is the most eye-opening experience of my life. I have a degree in psychology. I focused on child development and "abnormal" psych courses. The DSM was our "bible" in school (how flawed was that!). I have been working with children since I was 14 years old, for 20 years! I thought I knew autism. I thought I knew ADHD. Not only have I taken away so much information for myself, I have gained such a better understanding for my students. Especially surrounding meltdowns and shutdowns. This should be mandatory training for every educator. I have never felt so "seen" before. Having a name for the things that I do that are so different than everyone in my life, realizing that I'm not crazy - I feel so validated. Thank you!! 🙂"

"I would just like to thank you for providing me with so much information that I can now use to better understand myself and my familyalong with the increased ability to support my ND clients better.

I also appreciated the recordings. It enabled me to work through the sessions at my pace - I learn things best when I write them down but I cannot do this at speed! The recordings enabled me to pause, reflect, take notes as I went and I believe I have likely been able to understand and process way more as a result.

And the additional resources! There is so much there for me to go away and 'monotrope' with 🙂 Thank you!"

"I wanted to express my gratitude to the whole team for putting together such an instructive, comprehensive, and grounded overview of autism. I worked as an ABA therapist in the US for a year immediately after graduating university, and that experience had a profound (largely negative) impact on how I view autism intervention (i.e., the need for it) and my trust in the research and narratives around autism. Since that experience, I’ve sought out alternative perspectives as a researcher myself and have been met with strong resistance. This course has been both validating and challenging. A main take away for me is that my educational process around autism will never end.  The work you’re doing with this course does have a real impact (even on researchers, who never listen or learn!), and I promise to be the louder voice when the problematic researchers start blabbing on and on."

"The course was brilliant, full of informative and informed content, so refreshing and liberating to hear from actually autistic people as a very newly late-diagnosed autistic adult myself and as a parent of an autistic child. A great mix of a wealth of information (saving me a load of my own research time!) and analysis and such a brilliant validation of autistic experience. Other training and support often comes from a neurotypical perspective which pathologises and can get in the way of real understanding of autistic people and lead to harmful decisions. The course was such a perfect introduction to being autistic and truly life-changing. It should be taken by all professionals working with autistic people. I can't thank you all enough for doing this."

Frequently Asked Questions

Some of the most commonly asked questions. If you have anything else you would like to ask please email us at michelle<at>theautisticadvocate.com

We also have specific FAQS for the pay-monthly option (please scroll down)

Will there be a live round of The Inside of Autism in 2024?

No, we don't think so. People on our mailing list will find out first if it does happen!

How long does my Membership last for?

12 calendar months from your date of purchase (and NOT from the date you first access the training),

i.e. if you buy your training on 01 Feb 2024 but don't access the training until 31 July 2024 your membership will expire on 31 January 2024 (12 calendar months after your date of purchase). Memberships are set to auto-renew but you can manage this inside of your student account.

What are the dates of the Q&As for 2024?

Q&As start at, 7pm (UK time) and last for around 2 hours. Each Q&A is recorded so you can leave early or simply watch the recording (and if you can't make it live you can send us a question 👍)

2024 Q&A DATES (all Tuesdays except for February which is a Thursday)

March 26
April 30
May 28
June 25
July 30
August 27
September 24
October 29
November 26
December 17

What types of questions can I ask in the monthly Q&As?

The membership is focussed on the Inside Of Autism course which is about refaming the Autism narrative and not a 'cover-all' membership, so questions tend to be asked around the themes of the training. The monthly Q&As sessions will be focussed on the content of The Inside of Autism to enable you to go even deeper in deconstructing your understanding of the Autism narrative.

That said, you can ask any questions you like! And in 2023 we had a HUGE mix of questions. We also really built up a community and had some great discussions and fun too!

We have a complete library of all of the Q&A questions and Kieran's answers; which is an invaluable resource.

We'll ensure there is a good mix of questions each month. We may group questions together if there are multiple questions on a similar topic.

There are many other wonderful memberships which advice on specific areas e.g. parenting, EHCPs etc.

How much is an annual membership?

$125 if you pay in one go. Or $144 in total if you choose to pay in 12 monthly instalments.

Please see the section on pricing above for more information.

You can use the currency convertor at xe.com to work out the charge in your own currency. We have students from across the world so charge in USA dollars.

If multiple people from the same organisation wish to attend it is still $125/$250 per person as everyone gets their own account. We can arrange that with you directly, please contact us for more information. We also offer a 'private' version of the training for organisations, charities, schools etc.

Is there a payment plan?

Yes! We launched this option in November 2023 as Teachable (where we host our online school) launched a Membership option. You're joining the Membership for the year, but able to pay it in monthly instalments.

Paying monthly does work out a little more expensive as it costs us more to manage.

You can manage your subscription inside of your Teachable Student Dashboard.

We have pay-monthly specific FAQs below.

Can I dip in and out?

Technically yes... Let us explain!

Even though we offer a 'pay monthly' option this is still an annual commitment, but paid in 12 instalments. However, if you are having financial difficulty, ill health etc then you can leave and come back. We don't want people to feel they are locked in with no way of escape, but obviously we also hope that most members join us in the spirit of committing for a year and do stay with us.

So can cancel your pay-monthly membership at any time and you will lose access to everything contained within the membership at the end of your current month. When you sign back up you will find your progress in the training has been saved.

The difference is that is you pay upfront for the whole year and then cancel (i.e. you pay upfront for the year in Month 1 and cancel in Month 7) you won't receive a pro-rata refund of your remaining months. You will retain access until the end of your billing cycle (i.e. the end of Month 12) and then your Membership won't be renewed.

Do you offer refunds?

No. Due to the immediate access you receive to all of the training and resources we do not offer refunds.

We are willing to be flexible for up to 30 days if you have not accessed any of the training material you purchased. If you accessed any of the material within 30 days we reserve the right not to offer you a refund.

Whilst this may sound harsh, we do this to discourage people from signing up, downloading all of the course materislas, and then 'complaining' and demanding a refund (this happens more than you believe!) We run a business which supports our family so we try to be firm, yet fair.

We do have  terms and conditions (https://theautisticadvocate.com/terms/) if you would like to see these before deciding to make your purchase.

PAY MONTHLY: You can cancel your pay-monthly membership at any time and you will lose access to everything contained within the membership at the end of your current month.

Do you have a bursary?

It has always been our aim that the course is as accessible as possible. We believe the 2024 cost for an annual membership is exceptionally good value (and this is a same price as 2023) for 12 months of access.

However, if you want to attend but paying will make you struggle financially please contact us and we will always try to help you.We can offer full or part bursaries.

We can offer full or part bursaries.

We also have the course-only option which is $50: The Inside of Autism - Course-Only option

I have bought my place but am struggling to access the training inside of Teachable. Can you help?

We have a dedicated troubleshooting page here: https://theautisticadvocate.com/accesstraining

If this doesn't help please forward your receipt from Teachable (check your spam) to Michelle and she will help you (michelle<at>theautisticadvocate.com

How do I contact you?

Via email; michelle<at>theautisticadvocate.com

Why do you charge in US Dollars and what are the conversion rates?

We're based in the UK but have customers across the world so it is much easier to show the price in US Dollars. But you pay in your domestic currency (your bank will do the conversion and you will be charged the equivalent in your local currency).

The coversion rates change daily and you can use the currency convertor on xe.com to check them.

If you are in the UK and would prefer an invoice in GBP we can arrange this. Please contact Michelle (before you buy the training) on michelle<at>theautisticadvocate.com

Does the course come with CEU/CPD credits?

Not at the moment. It is something we are considering. You can get a certificate for completion of the main training.

I've already attended one of the live rounds in 2021/2022 so would I benefit from joining the Membership?

Yes! We really hope you would get so much benefit and this one of the main reasons we have swapped from running 7 week live rounds to an annual membership.

Many people came back to every single live round we ran in 2020 and 2021! And many more people attended at least two lives rounds. This showed us that every time someone attended they took more value from the training and also loved being part of the community.

And the Membership won't be static. Each month we will host the Q&A and you have access to those and we will add in new resources etc as we need to based on the feedback we receive from students. We also have plans to keep the membership fresh and current and the best training on Autism and what it means to be Autistic.

Can I buy spaces for family and friends?

Yes and No!

No, as unfortunately Teachable doesn't have that feature yet available for Memberships (you can gift many of other trainings)

But, if email michelle<the>theautisticadvocate.com we'll be able to help you to be generous as we can organise this with you directly.

Payment Plan: Frequently Asked Questions

We launched the option to pay monthly in November 2023 and thought it would be useful to keep these FAQs seperate.

If you have anything else you would like to ask please email us at michelle<at>theautisticadvocate.com

Paying monthly does work out a little more expensive as it costs us more to manage.

You can manage your subscription inside of your Teachable Student Dashboard.

How much is an annual membership on a payment plan?

If you choose to pay monthly the total price increases slighly to $144 (from $125 for annual) because it costs us more to manage a pay-monthly system.

What happens if I don't pay a monthly instalment?

Teachable (where we host our online school) will try to take your monthly payment three times. If it's unsuccessful after three times your membership will be cancelled and you will lose access immediately to everything contained within the Membership.

Memberships are annual and set to auto-renewal as default. You can change this in the 'Subscriptions' tab within your student account.
